In the past six years or so, Macanudo (a General Cigar brand) has embarked on a modernization campaign. Their previous (Connecticut Shade oriented) product line got a little bit long in the tooth. To combat that, Macanudo introduced the Inspirado line which featured a full breadth of cigar boldness from mild through full.

More recently, in the past year or so, Macanudo came out with the Emissary line. It retails at a higher price point than the Inspirado line, but far less than “super-premium” brands. This video reviews the Emissary Espana – an international cigar if there ever was one.

Emissary Espanda features tobacco from the US (broadleaf Claro wrapper), Nicaraguan binder, and filler from Colombia, Nicaragua, Dominicana and (as the name implies) Spain. To top things off, the sticks are rolled in Honduras.

Many people are surprised to learn that Spain is a big, big cigar consumer – in fact, Spain is second in the world to China in terms of Cuban cigar consumption. The European offices of many cigar companies are located in Spain as well.

All the tobacco in the Espana are aged to some length, over five years.

Sorry to say, but all of that international input and aging resulted in, at least in my opinion, a pretty unremarkable cigar. Construction was very good, burn good as well. Flavor was not bad, but really very ordinary. Specific comments are in the video.

An early vitola for the Brick House was the “Mighty Mighty,” a 6” x 60 gauge stick that (although common today) was a novelty in 2009. That and the low price brought a lot of attention for Brick House and got it off the ground.

Overall this is a very okay cigar – certainly not memorable. I rate it a 7.75/10. I wouldn’t go out of my way to buy one – I haven’t seen any great deals on them standalone or in samplers. But if you spot one and are curious, it might be worth a try.
