The current structure of the World Test Championship (WTC) raises serious questions about fairness. England played 22 matches, while South Africa played just 12 — yet both competed for the same mace. How is that a level playing field?

Even James Anderson pointed out the physical toll of such imbalanced schedules. South Africa’s 12 matches included away tours to New Zealand, West Indies, and Bangladesh, while at home they only faced Asian teams like India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka — a relatively easier path.

The core problem? No fixed structure for opponent selection. It's dictated more by bilateral agreements and money than merit. Unless the ICC funds and regulates tours, true balance is a myth.

Thankfully, there’s a push from ICC to ensure a minimum 3-Test series ahead. This is a much-needed step to bring parity to the WTC.
