Charlie is definitely an outdoor pet (as my video next week will demonstrate) and therefore we only spend about 2 to 3 hours with him every day. Idealy it would be more, but with work, cooking, and other activities it just isn't possible for us to live outside with him. The good news is, Charlie is a Red Fox, which means he really values his alone time and doesn't love being social all day anyways. In fact, in the wild, with the exception of mating season, foxes live in their own territories alone for most of their lives. With all this in mind, I decided to spend an entire 24 hour period of time with Charlie as a social experiment just to see how he would handle it. I was curious if he would be super happy and loving, or annoyed and grumpy. I also planned and entire day of activities. The only part of the day I didn't show is the period of time where we filmed our video for next week.

I come to find out that Charlie really was irritated with me being in his space for that long. I think he enjoyed going out and getting treats etc. but for the most part, by the end, he was pretty much ready for me to pack it up and get away with him. I have also found that Charlie associates me mostly with food and walks. So if I'm not doing those things for him then he really doesn't need me around a ton. Sure he likes to be pet and get belly rubs. But all that really only lasts a few minutes every couple of hours.

I have often wondered what it would be like to have a dog in the back yard, and while I still think that would be a good idea, I'm not sure the dog would love being attacked every time it went into Charlies area which I think is exactly what would likely happen. Bottom line, it was an interesting 24 hours, I learned a lot from Charlie and I'm glad I could spend the entire day with him.
