Turkey is currently not allowing citizens from 66 different countries to enter the country and has established strict quarantine procedures. Drivers of trucks delivering essential goods from and to the EU via Turkey are facing quarantine periods lasting 14 days at the Turkish-EU border – mainly at the Kapikule border crossing point between Bulgaria and Turkey.

In its communication to the EU, IRU criticised these disproportionate measures that not only impact trade in the region, but also interrupt wider Eurasian trade flows owing to the geographically strategic position of Turkey.

With the world facing one of the worst global crises in history, IRU has been advocating strongly for truck drivers to be able to perform their vital work in the safest and most effective and efficient way possible.

“Road transport is the lifeblood of the global economy. During these difficult times, essential goods need to be able to reach those who need them most,” said Mr de Pretto. “While it is vital that countries take the appropriate measures to protect their populations, goods transport must be allowed to continue so that vital medical and food supplies can get through.”

A record number of drivers and their trucks are trapped for nearly a week at the border between Bulgaria and Turkey in poor condition without food, water and sanitary possibilities such a running water and WC. The Bulgarian authorities are trying to accelerate to procedure but the maximum capacity reached until now is 1,500 trucks passing the checkpoint, Kapitan Andreevo, and everything is in the hands of the Turkish authorities on the other side of the border, an external for the EU.

Because of the almost humanitarian crisis on Bulgarian soil, one of the main routes between Western Europe and the Middle East, the Bulgarian Red Cross started to distribute bottles of mineral water and croissants to the trapped drivers. One of them told EPA-EFE that normally he makes the route from Western Europe to Turkey in four days but now the trip seems to last up to 10 days because of the limitations after the coronavirus Covid-19 outbreak.

Greek police fired tear gas to repel hundreds of stone-throwing migrants who tried to force their way across the border from Turkey on Sunday, with thousands more behind them after Ankara relaxed curbs on their movement. The Greek government called the confrontations a threat to national security. “Do not attempt to enter Greece illegally – you will be turned back,” Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said on Twitter after a security meeting on the situation. It was the second straight day of clashes at the border crossing near the northeastern Greek town of Kastanies.
