Raksha Bandhan is a Hindu festival that celebrates the love and respect between siblings, and the bond of protection that exists between them. The name comes from the Sanskrit words rakṣā, which means "protection", and bandhan, which means "to tie". The festival is celebrated on the last day of the month of Saawan, which usually falls in August.
During the festival, sisters tie a colorful thread called a rakhi around their brothers' wrists. The rakhi symbolizes the sister's prayers for her brother's well-being and his promise to protect her. The sister may also mark her brother's forehead with red powder. In return, the brother may give his sister gifts and vow to protect her from harm. The festival may also include rituals, sweets, and playful banter between siblings.
Raksha Bandhan can also be celebrated with cousins, friends, and others who share a brotherly or sisterly bond. For example, women may send rakhis to soldiers to thank them for their service, or sisters who don't have brothers may tie rakhis on each other's wrists.
There are several stories in Indian history that may have contributed to the development of the festival, including one about Lord Krishna and Draupadi. In the story, Draupadi tore a piece of her sari to treat Krishna's wounded finger, and he promised to protect her in the future. Years later, when Draupadi was humiliated in court, Krishna came to her rescue by making her sari longer. The piece of cloth that Draupadi tore became a sacred thread that symbolizes the festival's significance.
