I may risk eternal condemnation in the realm of camera enthusiasts for saying this, but there’s a huge amount of hype surrounding this particular lens—and for good reason. It really is a great standard zoom. However, is it genuinely connected to Angenieux? I’m not entirely sure. There might be a link, but perhaps not in the way most people assume. I’d love to hear your thoughts, and if anyone out there has an official source that clarifies the situation, please drop a comment or link.

I’ve spent weeks combing through every corner of the internet—forums, articles, you name it—and all I’ve found are scattered discussions that don’t offer much in the way of solid proof. It’s entirely possible I’m barking up the wrong tree. Still, with this lens selling for around £500, it makes you wonder whether the Angenieux name is being leveraged to boost its value. That curiosity is exactly why I felt the need to investigate further.

In my search, I even dug up some old pages from Practical Photographer magazine in the 1990s, which I found archived on Google Books (and of course, those images belong to Google, not me). Those snippets are fascinating, but they don’t definitively clear up the mystery either.

All that being said, if you’re in the market for a truly excellent zoom lens, this one delivers in terms of performance. Whether it’s legitimately tied to Angenieux or not—that’s the big question. Hopefully, with a bit more digging and crowd-sourced info, we can finally get to the bottom of it.

However if you are in the market for a truly great zoom this is the one
