They say the third time's a charm right? Well, for this newest iteration of a pearl phaze, storm sure is hoping so. Following in the footsteps of the original Phaze and the Phaze 4, the new phaze a.i features the tx-16 pearl cover which has only ever been used on the Storm Journey, but replaces reactagloss with their new power edge polished finish. Then on the inside is that familiar Velocity core, but this time utilizing their a.i technology to lower the RG and increase the differential.

So since this is hopefully the pearl phaze I've been been waiting for for almost a decade now, I kept the layout nice and simple. The 4.5x4x4 2LS layout is one you're probably going to see a lot of on these strong symmetrical pieces as it just plain works and most importantly, allows me to see what these types of pieces can do for a wide variety of players.

AND ON THE LANES… - Could it be? Is this finally the pearl phaze we've all been waiting for? After the success of the Phaze 2 and the tease that was the phaze 4, I think we finally have what Storm has needed for years. The phaze a.i takes the smooth and rounded shape that the phaze two has been the best at for years and adds a bit of easy length and a whole lot of continuation through the pins.

But my favorite part about throwing this one from Storm is that it's just uncomplicated. The Phaze 2 has been one of the best benchmark pieces on the market for years because of its simple design and predictability. The Phaze a.i follows directly in those footsteps, but is cleaner through the front part of the lane which will help a wide variety of bowlers see a higher carry percentage. Simply put, if I needed to hit the pocket, this is one I would trust over a lot of other choices.

Now, on the list of downsides, this black and white color scheme sucks. Its hard to see what your ball is doing as it goes down the lane, and even looking back at this footage, I had to slow it down multiple times to see what the ball was actually doing. That's not a problem when you're striking, but in those times where you don't have a lot of miss room, that will likely be an issue.

But if you can handle that small setback, I'd recommend pairing this one with a Storm Phaze 2 as well as a 900 Global Harsh Reality Pearl. I think the phaze 2 recommendation is pretty self explanatory as that and this will make a great 1-2 punch, and then the harsh reality pearl is a step above both of them to cover you when you need some help getting the ball to start up a bit sooner than both of the other options in your arsenal.

Jumping to our crossbrand comparisons, I first took a look at the upcoming Raptor Fury from Motiv, and here I see a piece that's a touch weaker but more core dominant. The Phaze a.i is very round from the breakpoint to the pins, but this one from Motiv seems to use its core strength to square the ball up to the pocket directly. Then as you'd expect, its a bit forward through the pins, but is equally as effective.

Then I took a look at the Roto Grip Optimum Idol Pearl because I wanted to see how much overlap there is between these two and it turns out, there's a ton. Sure, there's some subtle differences, but I would attribute most of that small difference to the different finishing polish. There's no world where I would carry both of these to one event, so if you're in-between, I'd argue there's little need to analyze much further because outside of the color scheme, they're just not that different.

But with that, here’s my recommendations on types of bowlers that I think would match up well with the Storm Phaze a.i. The first is all you Phaze 2 lovers out there. I'm one of the weird ones in that I've never had a phaze 2 that I liked, but I really enjoyed this pearl version. So if I can see something I like with a core that hasn't treated me well in the past, I'd have to believe that if you're a fan of the solid version, you're REALLY going to love this new Phaze a.i.

The second recommendation is for Rev dominant bowlers. The thing that makes the phaze a.i look so good through the pins is its smooth transition from hook to roll. This is a feature rev dominant players like me need in their bag. It's really easy for us to make symmetrical pearls go sideways off the spot, so this built in control makes this a great choice for those types of players to combine control with a high carry percentage.

The all new phaze a.i might be a little tough to see going down the lane, but in the right hands, could take you into a new era of high scores.
