Sid Millward was often called the British Spike Jones, simply because he was the leader of a humorous band that played silly versions of classic songs. In 1936 he was one of the county's top saxophonists: his band debuted in 1937 at the Paramount Cinema as part of the Cine-Variety circuit.

The Nitwits became incredibly successful in both America and Europe, with sell-out runs in The Stardust Room in Vegas and Paris Lido in France, plus seven weeks opening for Tom Jones at The London Palladium.
