No Invasion Necessary: How China Can Use Coercion to Take Taiwan Without a War

China’s escalating aggression toward Taiwan has generated significant debates in Washington and globally about whether China would invade Taiwan to “unify” it with the mainland. This debate crucially misses China’s other avenues to take Taiwan.

AEI’s Dan Blumenthal and Frederick W. Kagan, who direct the AEI–Institute for the Study of War Coalition Defense of Taiwan project, will lead a panel on why the US and our allies must take seriously the threat of a coercion-based strategy toward Taiwan, as highlighted in their new report, From Coercion to Capitulation: How China Can Take Taiwan Without a War. They will be joined by experts from the Institute for the Study of War and the Center for Strategic and International Studies to discuss how the US can lead a counter-coercion effort to prevent China from succeeding.
