Cayley Mandadi was born in 1998 in Texas and grew up in a loving family, excelling academically and participating in various extracurricular activities. She was a sophomore at Trinity University in San Antonio when she met Mark Howerton, a professional baseball player. Their relationship was tumultuous, marked by intense arguments and jealousy, with friends and family noticing signs of abuse.

On October 29, 2017, after an argument at a music festival, Mark drove Cayley to the hospital where she was found unconscious with severe injuries. Despite initial claims of drug use, further investigation revealed that Cayley had suffered blunt force trauma, leading to her death.

Mark Howerton was arrested and charged with her death, but his first trial ended in a mistrial due to insufficient evidence. In a retrial, new evidence and a detailed investigation led to Mark being found guilty of aggravated assault resulting in bodily harm, for which he was sentenced to 20 years in prison. Despite the conviction, Cayley’s family felt that justice was not fully served and continued to seek accountability from Trinity University for failing to protect her from the violence she endured.
