Former Prime Minister and veteran Congress leader Manmohan Singh, the architect of several groundbreaking reforms that liberalised the economy, died in Delhi on Thursday after a prolonged illness. The 92-year-old renowned economist was admitted to All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Delhi, on Thursday evening after a "sudden loss of consciousness", the hospital said in a statement.

AIIMS said that Manmohan Singh was "being treated for age-related medical conditions and had sudden loss of consciousness at home on December 26. He was brought to the Medical Emergency at AIIMS, New Delhi at 8.06 pm. Despite all efforts, he could not be revived and was declared dead at 9.51 pmThe mortal remains of former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh were brought to the Congress headquarters in Delhi on Saturday for party leaders and workers to pay their last respects. His final journey will proceed to Nigambodh Ghat for state funeral rites. The government, responding to Congress's demand, has approved a memorial site for Dr. Singh, with Home Minister Amit Shah communicating the decision to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge.
