Groote Eylandt is the largest island in the Gulf of Carpentaria in north-eastern Australia. Groote lies about 50km from the Northern Territory mainland and eastern coast of Arnhem Land, about 630km from Darwin. The island measures about 50km from east to west and 60km from north to south; it is generally quite low-lying, with an average height above sea level of 15 metres.
Groote is also home to the largest global manganese ore mine, GEMCO a subsidiary of South 32 (ex BHP Billiton) are responsible for mining and exporting to markets in
China, India, S Korea, Japan and Europe. GEMCOs current annual export target is 4.5m tonnes and in the past 50 years it has exported more than 88 million tonnes of ore.
GEMCO is the sixth most profitable mine in Australia and an important mining operation for the Northern Territory as it is one of the largest contributors to Northern Territory Government mining royalties.
The main berth at Groote is the Milner Bay Jetty, built in the 1960’s and it comprises of a jetty with a fixed head loading facility, linked to two mooring dolphins to the North and two mooring dolphins to the South. As a result, vessels loading manganese must move to position the appropriate hatch at the loading conveyor.
Vessels berth both port and starboard side alongside, the designated side is determined by the tidal current which is running at the time of berthing.
