Less than a week before Puneet Khurana, the co-owner of Delhi’s popular Woodbox Cafe, tragically died by suicide, his estranged wife and business partner, Manika Pahwa, posted a cryptic message on social media. Pahwa's post on Instagram spoke of enduring “toxicity and narcissistic abuse” and claimed she felt "free" now. The couple, who have been going through a divorce, have been embroiled in business disputes.
Khurana, 40, was found hanging in his room in Model Town's Kalyan Vihar area on New Year's Eve. The incident unfolded after a recorded conversation between the couple on Monday night, which revealed arguments over business-related issues. Khurana's family has pointed fingers at Ms. Pahwa for his death, alleging she "instigated him."
In her social media post, Pahwa reflected on her journey towards healing from alleged abuse. She emphasized the importance of respect and kindness and mentioned her disdain for material wealth over virtues like love and trust. Without naming anyone, Pahwa referenced her abusers as "insecure cowards" and hoped they would eventually see the error in their ways.
Khurana's sister told ANI that Ms. Pahwa and her family had mentally pressured Khurana, urging him to the point of considering suicide. She accused Pahwa of making persistent demands for her share of the business, despite a clear division of assets established during their divorce proceedings. Khurana's mother echoed these sentiments, stating her son silently suffered due to Pahwa’s actions.
Married in 2016, Khurana and Pahwa had been separated for two years. Following Khurana's death, his family has filed a police complaint and is seeking legal action against Ms. Pahwa and her family, calling for a thorough investigation into the alleged instigation leading to Khurana’s death.
