"If you look at the Closing the Gap figures today, children born today, they're still expected to die 16 years earlier than non-indigenous people in the Northern Territory.

So in 2017, we recorded the world's highest rate of rheumatic fever ever in history in Australia or overseas.

Anywhere you look in the world, the best marker for social disadvantage is rheumatic heart disease and the fact that indigenous Australians have the world's highest rate of acute rheumatic fevers and rheumatic heart disease, it makes me ashamed.

In fact, there's nothing we have done to date in Australia to try to reduce the rates of rheumatic fever.

And there's no way one can close the gap when children, by the time they start school, they have heart disease, eye disease, ear disease.

The medical problem has been long been solved. What we need to today is political will." Dr Bo Remenyi
