A 2016 nationwide survey in Solomon Islands revealed the challenge that rural communities face in accessing appropriate water, sanitation and health (WASH) services. Only 54% of the population had access to improved water services, 13% to improved sanitation facilities and 80% of the population still practiced open defecation in their communities.

These challenges extend to schools. According to the latest (2021) UN Water statistics, 64% of schools in Solomon Islands have no or limited access to drinking water, 63% have no sanitation facilities and 75% lack any access to hygiene services. (UNWater https://washdata.org/)

The WASH project New Times, New Targets aims to improve sustainable and inclusive access to WASH services and facilities within schools, health clinics and communities in rural areas of western Guadalcanal Province in Solomon Islands.

The project is an Australian aid initiative implemented by Plan International Australia in partnership with Live & Learn Environmental Education on behalf of the Australian Government’s Water for Women Fund.
