Doug Densmore, a third-generation maple syrup farmer to work the same sugarbush as his grandfather, runs what in Vermont is called a "bucket operation." Maple syrup is his only cash crop, and along with the old-time methods that he still uses and the notorious finicky weather patterns of central Vermont, every small change of the thermometer can either spell success or failure.
This is the jumping off point for "A Vermont Farmer" — a year long look at what life is like for a subsistence farmer in an era of increased mechanization and consolidation on the American farm.
