The Mental Healthcare Act, 2017 (MHCA), a landmark legislation was enacted in 2018 to protect and promote the rights of persons living with mental health conditions to access mental health treatment and services in the country. Four years after the enactment, the fundamental provisions necessary for the effective administration and oversight of the Act are yet to be properly implemented.

Through this tracker, we aim to provide updates on the implementation of the MHCA Nationally and across States & Union Territories. Relevant information has been sourced from government orders and notifications, meeting notes of the State Mental Health Authorities, credible news articles and from individuals and organisations working in the mental health sector.

We believe this information will collectively benefit individuals and communities towards improving mental health outcomes to be rights-based, equitable, accessible, affordable and of good quality. We, therefore, encourage individuals and organisations working towards the implementation of the MHCA within their State to share with us any updates they may have on the implementation of the Act.
