Lizzie Perrotte asks: What was it like to be a female artist in the nineteenth century? Berthe Morisot (1841 – 1895) certainly knew her own worth. "I don’t think there has been a man who has treated a woman as equal" she observed towards the end of her life. Morisot was the great mistress of the domestic scene, where she elevated her female subjects by imbuing them with a rich internal life.
