Welcome to Our Lady of the Rocks (Gospa od Škrpjela), one of Montenegro’s most iconic landmarks!
Located just off the coast of Perast in the Bay of Kotor, this small man-made island is steeped in history, legend, and faith.
According to local tradition, sailors from Perast discovered an image of the Virgin Mary on a rock in the sea back in the 15th century. Believing it to be a sign of protection, they began placing stones and sinking old ships at the site gradually creating the island we see today.
At its heart stands the Church of Our Lady of the Rocks, built in 1632 and beautifully adorned with frescoes, paintings, and silver votive tablets offered by sailors as tokens of gratitude for safe voyages. Every year, locals continue the tradition known as Fašinada, throwing stones into the sea to preserve and expand the island.
This breathtaking site is not only a symbol of faith and unity but also a must-visit destination for travelers exploring the Adriatic coast.
