The Rithmatist by Brandon Sanderson is a young adult fantasy novel set in an alternate Earth where Rithmatists wield chalk-based magic to command two-dimensional creatures called chalklings. Joel Saxon, a non-Rithmatist student at the prestigious Armedius Academy, dreams of mastering this art despite being excluded from it. When Rithmatist students begin disappearing, Joel joins eccentric Professor Fitch and reluctant Rithmatist Melody Munns in the investigation.
