This video explains the development of the brainstem, a key concept in embryology and neuroanatomy for medical students.

We begin with the bilaminar embryo transforming into a trilaminar embryo, followed by formation of the neural plate, neural groove, neurulation, and closure of the neural tube. The video then explains how the cranial end of the neural tube dilates to form the brain, giving rise to the prosencephalon, mesencephalon, and rhombencephalon.

From here, the rhombencephalon divides into the metencephalon and myelencephalon, while the mesencephalon contributes to midbrain development. The video also highlights the neural tube folds and how the brainstem develops from mesencephalon, metencephalon, and myelencephalon.
We then discuss the cellular organization of the neural tube—from a single layer of cells to three distinct layers:
• Ependymal layer

Next, the video covers how neurons organize into medially placed motor nuclei (from the basal lamina) and laterally placed sensory nuclei (from the alar lamina).

Finally, the functional components of brainstem nuclei are described, including:
• Somatic efferent nuclei

• General and special visceral afferent nuclei
• General and special somatic afferent nuclei
