Javelins or throwing spears made from wood, such as hazel, dog wood, holly, yew (among many others) with a fire hardened point, have been around since the middle Paleolithic or maybe even earlier. the spear thrower was invented in the Upper Paleolithic and by the Mesolithic, we're attaching tips of our spears, and adding fletchings to keep them accurate at the increased range the spear thrower provides.

what you'll need:

for the spear:

a straight ish piece of season wood, the hazel in this video was cut last year. 5-6ft long, and no more than 1/2 inch diameter.

A point of your choosing.

hand made cordage

natural glue

for the fletchings

flight feathers from a medium to large bird, both from right wing, or both from left wing. one of each won't work.
