Behind the Scenes at Wynn – Poolside Falconry

“Any time you free-fly your bird, you risk it not returning, right? And that's where the relationship-building comes in,” says Hannah Crowley, abatement falconer at Wynn Las Vegas. “It’s magical every time the bird returns to the glove.”

Your eyes are not deceiving you; that is a bird of prey you might have seen swooping over the pools at Wynn and Encore. The resort uses Falconry-based Bird Abatement to deter nuisance birds that damage property, steal food and, in general, can cause a raucous while guests attempt to relax and have a good time.

The goal is not to hunt other birds like pigeons; instead, the Wynn falcons create a presence. They do flight exercises across the pool to establish their territory. Think of them as aviary security guards without the badges.

Even better, the Falconry program is sustainable, eco-friendly and non-lethal. It plays off of the birds' natural instincts, which discourages the other birds from wanting to nest.

“I love my birds dearly, but they don't love me, and I'm okay with that,” Crowley says. “We've built this mutually beneficial relationship. When I can go home, they'll fall asleep on the glove because they're that comfortable. There's a trust bond there that feels as profound as love … coming from a wild creature like that. It is cool how this nature-based issue can only be resolved with a nature-based solution.”
