Iranian American writer, scholar, and translator Dr. Mariam Rahmani, acclaimed author of Liquid and faculty member at Bennington College, joins the Shangri La Museum of Islamic Art, Culture & Design as its summer Scholar-in-Residence. Her debut novel Liquid, A Love Story, was named an Oprah Daily Most Anticipated Book of the Year and a March Book of the Month Club Main Pick. It is currently being translated into Italian, Dutch, and Croatian.

During her residency in Honolulu, she will develop her forthcoming book The House of Mourning, which explores the intertwined histories of gender, colonialism, and the circulation of Islamic art in the West. Engaging deeply with Shangri La’s collections and Doris Duke’s archives, Dr. Rahmani will illuminate the hidden stories of objects while reflecting on the layered realities of indigenous dispossession in Hawai‘i. Her residency included public programs that foster dialogue and advance the Doris Duke Foundation’s mission to support creativity, equity, and sustainability.
