Big Ideas Math [IM1]: 4.1 - Writing Equations in Slope-Intercept Form (Lecture & Problem Set)

Now that we've graphed using several forms, let's begin practice writing our equations! Starting with our favorite slope-intercept form (y = mx + b), this is most optimally used when given the slope and y-intercept, or you have two points and one of them is the y-intercept. This textbook's section makes sure to give you the y-intercept as a point each time to remind you of when this SHOULD be used versus another form. If you aren't given the slope (m), you'll need to find it using the slope formula or determine the slope from a graph by counting the rise/run. They may also present the points in function notation, such as f(0) = -3 is the same as the point (0,-3), or a y-intercept of -3.

Word problems will finally have us come up with the equations rather than having them write them for us. We either look for words that would represent the rate of change (slope) and starting value (y-int.), or information that helps us determine two points to find the slope and use the appropriate point for the y-intercept.
