The state of Florida has only one endemic bird species, the Florida Scrub-Jay Aphelocoma coerulescens. There are three other species of Scrub-Jay: Island Scrub-Jay, California Scrub-Jay, and Woodhouse’s Scrub-Jay. The Florida Scrub-Jay was elevated to a full species in 1995. The population of the Florida Scrub-Jay has declined by 90%, and it is a threatened species. The population is estimated to be 10,000. It is now found from the Palm Coast on the east coast south to Boca Raton. There used to be birds in the Miami area; those birds are long gone due to development. On the west coast of the state, it occurs from Cedar Key south to Collier County. In the center part of the state, it occurs from Ocala south to the west side of Lake Okeechobee. The Florida Scrub-Jay is a habitat specialist that requires a scrub oak understory for its food source, specifically acorns. They cache these acorns for later consumption and remember approximately 70% of what they bury! Its habitat needs to have fires about every 8 years for good acorn crops. The Florida Scrub-Jay has a variety of foods on its menu, including insects, lizards, small snakes, larvae, and spiders. They don’t migrate and stay within a small range, rarely leaving. Young birds help raise the next year's young.
There are currently 15 surviving endemic bird species in the continental United States.
