Описание к видео De Facto National Anthem of the 1st & 2nd Spanish Republics (1873–1874, 1931–1939): "Himno de Riego"

The “Himno de Riego” was the de facto national anthem of both the First (1873–1874) and Second (1931–1939) Spanish Republics, symbolizing republicanism, constitutionalism, and opposition to monarchy. Composed in 1820 to honor liberal officer Rafael del Riego, the march became closely associated with Spain’s liberal revolutions and was officially adopted during each republic as a break from monarchical traditions (which used the Marcha Real). While primarily performed instrumentally at state ceremonies, the “Himno de Riego” also had several unofficial lyric versions sung at political rallies and popular events, especially during the Second Republic, reinforcing its role as a powerful emblem of democratic and revolutionary ideals rather than a fixed, standardized anthem text.

The “Himno de Riego” was also both a patriotic song and a marching tune. It was written as a military march in 1820 and was meant to be played while troops marched, which gave it its strong, rhythmic character. Over time, it became a patriotic anthem associated with liberalism, constitutional government, and later republicanism, especially during the First and Second Spanish Republics. Its use in military parades, civic ceremonies, and mass demonstrations reinforced its dual role as a marching song for soldiers and a symbol of popular patriotism for republican Spain.

“Marcha Real,” the “Himno de Riego” functioned as Spain’s national anthem without officially sanctioned lyrics during the First (1873–1874) and Second (1931–1939) Spanish Republics. Although many unofficial lyric versions existed and were often sung at rallies, in schools, or by militias—especially during the Second Republic—none were ever formally adopted by the state. In official settings, such as government ceremonies, military events, and diplomatic occasions, the anthem was normally performed instrumentally only, just as Marcha Real is today.
