A groundbreaking study from Huazhong University of Science and Technology shows that exposure to famine in the womb increases the lifelong risk of infectious diseases — not just for those born during the famine, but also for their children.
Drawing from data on over 4.4 million cases in China’s Sichuan Province, researchers found that those born during the Great Chinese Famine (1958–1962) faced a 13% higher risk of infection. Their children had an 8% higher risk.
