9. The Path of Life and Your True Self
The diverse kinds of actions are due to the diversity of Warid (Divine Inspirations) that descend upon the Ahwal (Spiritual States of the servant).
Commentary (Syarah)
Warid is a Sufi terminological concept frequently found in Al-Hikam. The simple meaning of warid is a Divine Gift or Grace that descends upon a servant of God. The process of the warid descending is related to the readiness of the qalb (heart), which, in this context, is the level of the servant's ahwal (spiritual state).
For example, in the Qur'an, Allah says:
وَمَا يُلَقَّاهَا إِلَّا الَّذِينَ صَبَرُوا ...
But none is granted it except those who are patient... – Q.S. Al-Fussilat [41]: 35
In this verse, patience (sabar) is the servant's ahwal, and the gift of al-hasanah (goodness) bestowed is the warid granted by Allah.
However, in this aphorism, Ibn Ata’illah does not only discuss ahwal and warid; he also discusses the connection between warid and amal (actions). This means that the warid received by a servant is related to the servant's actions. The amal referred to here is a special kind of action (amal khass), namely an action or dharma related to a person's life mission or true identity (jatidiri).
It must be understood that the true identity (jatidiri) of every human being is unique and distinct. A warid that Allah bestows upon a servant will certainly reveal that servant's true identity. A prophet, a messenger, a saint (wali), a spiritual guide (mursyid), a king, a scientist—each possesses specific actions (amal) related to their inherent self. For instance, a servant whose true identity is that of a mursyid will be granted a warid in the form of knowledge or the ability to guide their disciples.
💡 Explanation and Article Description
This article discusses Al-Hikam Aphorism 9, which states: "The diverse kinds of actions are due to the diversity of Warid (Divine Inspirations) that descend upon the Ahwal (Spiritual States of the servant)."
Key Points:
• Sufi Terminology: The article explains three key terms in Suluk (the spiritual journey) that frequently appear in the book Al-Hikam by Ibn Ata’illah Al-Sakandari:
o Warid: A gift, grace, or inspiration from Allah that descends upon a servant.
o Ahwal: The inner state or readiness of the qalb (heart) of a servant.
o Amal: The actions or dharma performed by the servant.
• The Connection Between Ahwal and Warid: The author explains that the descending warid is closely related to the level of the servant's ahwal (readiness of the heart). This is exemplified by Q.S. Al-Fussilat [41]: 35, where patience (sabar), which is an ahwal, brings about al-hasanah (goodness), which is the warid.
• The Connection Between Warid and Special Amal: This aphorism emphasizes that the warid received by a servant will influence and be linked to that servant's actions. However, the amal intended here is a special kind of action (amal khass), which is the dharma or action related to the unique life mission or true identity of the individual.
• The Uniqueness of True Identity (Jatidiri): The warid granted by Allah serves to reveal the servant's true identity. Every role (prophet, messenger, wali, mursyid, king, scientist) has specific actions (amal) consistent with their true self, and the descending warid supports that role (for example, a warid of knowledge and guidance ability for a mursyid).
