Apple introduced a major change with iPhone X back in 2017 - the notch. With the notch came some changes to the way the status bar works. For older devices like iPhone 8 and so on, the battery indicator can have the battery percentage right next to it, but with the introduction of notched devices, that percentage has been moved into the Control Center which is inconvenient to check at a glance.

In iOS 16 Beta 4, Apple finally added the option to turn on the battery percentage in the status bar without having to open the Control Center. The way it was set up now, the percentage is overlayed on top of the battery icon. If you're a fan of the older notch battery style, you can switch off the iOS 16 Beta battery indicator in Settings.
