Winch recovery of a Mitsubishi Pajero that had become stuck in tidal mud. The vehicle was some way off, around 40 Metres.

We carry extensions of synthetic winch rope, around 80 Metres or so

The Vehicle had already been attached to a number of tow straps joined together. The thing with tow straps is that they are not very good for a snatch recovery as they do not really stretch enough.

However they stretch just enough to make them not particularly suitable for winch recovery either. During a winch recovery you do not need to store energy in the rope, as in a kinetic recovery.

As the tow ropes were already securely in place we did use them, you can see the delay between the winch taking up the slack and the vehicle moving.
