Story Summary :-
Jim/OP (72, M) is retired and has recently been diagnosed with the early stages of dementia. Although he had always thought he was close to his stepdaughter Layla (45, F) and his daughter-in-law Sally (41, F), one day everything changes when Jim overhears the two of them discussing manipulating him into changing his will to secure themselves substantial amounts of money. Without letting Layla and Sally know he heard what they said, Jim immediately takes steps to revise his will. He decides to leave Layla and Sally out of the will completely, instead giving his assets to trusted family members and his adopted son Bobby (32, M). He knows this will cause issues within the family and has come to Reddit asking for advice. In update one, Jim announces the changes in his will at a family gathering, and the crowd is shocked. Layla and Sally immediately protest their innocence and try to turn the tables by blaming Jim. In update two, still reeling from the blowup at the family dinner, Jim is receiving both support and derision from members of his family for his actions. He decides to get a lawyer to look over his will to make it iron tight just in case Layla and Sally try anything. In update three, Jim’s suspicions are confirmed when he receives a letter from the feared lawyer Horton Reed (50, M). Horton Reed was hired by Layla and Sally, and Reed specializes in contesting wills. In update four, Jim goes to court. Horton Reed has obtained a medical record trying to make it seem like Jim was too mentally unwell to have competently written his will. Jim consults a medical expert named Dr. Robert (50, M) to back up his defense. In update five, Dr. Robert establishes Jim as mentally sound at the time the will was drafted, and the judge dismisses Layla and Sally’s case. Jim’s will is now legally binding, and Layla and Sally’s reputation in the family is tarnished. While times are going to be tough for Jim due to his dementia, this situation has helped him grow closer to his supportive family members and his adopted son Bobby.
