In July 1980 Angolan rebel leader Jonas Savimbi would travel to London to appeal for greater support from the UK. Amidst a cold reception from British officials and anti-apartheid protesters, ITN’s Peter Sisson’s obtained this exclusive interview, in which an emboldened Savimbi discussed the future of Cold War Africa, the South Africa issue and tenets of a successful guerilla uprising. The following year the election of Ronald Reagan would secure further western support for UNITA’s operations as the Civil War dragged on.

This recent digitisation on crisp coloured film is one of our last interviews with the rebel leader and includes an incredibly brief but rare BTS of Savimbi and Sissons before the interview, also cut with new UNITA training footage.
