→ Join me as we fly back home to Tucson and into a monsoon storm aboard this beautiful Southwest Airlines 737 MAX 8! We push back from San Diego's gate 6 and head to runway 27 for a slightly delayed departure with a rather light load on board. We turn onto runway 27 and rocket off, getting a great view of KSAN's terminal and ground operations. We climb out to the west, turn 180 degrees to the east, and head towards Tucson. Once the clouds clear, the brown desert below comes into view for a short while, before encountering some dark and strong monsoon activity. Little did I know, the storms were on top of the airport, so our pilots slowed the aircraft down a bit and waited for the airport to re-open, which it did shortly after. On our descent, ATC gave us a 360 left turn to set up for an approach to runway 11L, which gave us an absolutely stunning, 360-degree view of the monsoon buildups to the northwest of the airport. We join an extended approach to runway 11L and land a while later. It was the longest straight-line approach I've ever experienced into Tucson in my life. I was honestly disoriented the entire approach trying to figure out what runway we were going to land on. It was a fun guessing game, but it was difficult :)
→ You can see a beautiful double rainbow between 1:00:00 and 1:03:00 which gave me 3 minutes of reflection from this trip. It told me that my father, who I lost to cancer in March of 2021 and would have turned 74 today (October 1st), was watching over me on this trip and always taught me that bigger, better things are on the horizon and everything happens for a reason. This trip didn't work out exactly as I had planned for a reason. One of those reasons was an absolutely immaculate view of a monsoon storm on approach that I would not have had the opportunity to see had this trip worked out as planned. The signs were there. The trip was rebooked. The trip did happen. It just didn't happen that day.
