Older than the Dinosaurs: Most of the petrified wood here dates back to the Late Triassic Period (about 225 million years ago).
The "Stone" Trees: The wood didn't just dry out; it was buried by volcanic ash and water rich in silica, which crystallized into quartz, jasper, and amethyst.
The Painted Desert: The vibrant red, orange, and lavender colors you see are caused by iron and manganese minerals in the soil.
