GE revives offer to India

As per the latest reports from the Business World, The US has revived an offer to cooperate with India on the development of jet engine technology which could be used to power India’s futuristic Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA). General Electric (GE) of the US, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of jet engines, has submitted a proposal for the co-development of a 110 kn thrust engine with Indian agencies.

US, UK & France in the race of Joint Venture

French engine maker Safran and UK engine maker Rolls Royce have already committed on more collaboration on defence technology including engine development to support Make in India move. The options for a tie-up are open from among the three contenders from US, UK & France. The Defense Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is the lead agency and a private Indian entity is also likely to be involved in the programme.

Why US backed out earlier?

Back in 2019, the U.S. Under-secretary of Defence Acquisition and Sustainment has informed that the India-U.S. Joint Working Group on jet engine cooperation within the framework of the Defence Technology and Trade Initiative (DTTI), “has been suspended,”. The reason cited was that the two country could not come to an understanding of what exportable technologies would be useful to the India which lead to challenges in terms of U.S. export controls. If we want to understand it in simple terms, US did not want to share technologies for the critical components for the engine.

Need of a powerful indigenous engine

The first two squadron of AMCA which will be its Mark-1 version, will be powered by GE-414 engine and the later version i.e. Mark-2 is planned to be powered with much powerful engine of 110KN class which will developed as JV between DRDO and foreign OEM. The Mark-1 is expected to enter production in 2030 and the mark-2 version somewhere in 2035. India has almost a decade ahead for the development of an indigenous engine.

GE-F414 EPE engine

In 2017, the U.S. Navy has awarded to General Electric (GE) a $114.8 million contract aimed to install new powerful GE-F414-EPE engines on its existing fleet of F/A-18 Super Hornet and EA-18G Growler aircraft. The "Enhanced Performance Engine" or "EPE" variant, includes a new core and a redesigned fan and compressor. The new engine version offers up to a 20 percent thrust boost, which increases its thrust to 26,400 pounds (120 kN), giving it an almost 11:1 thrust/weight ratio while the dimension of the engine remains the same. This will further allow to upgrade the Mark-I squadron of AMCA and Tejas-MK2 with a more powerful engine.
