Before you worry about memorizing every word, break the scene into beats and see the big picture. You may not know each line yet, but you can know the sequence of events and the emotional turns. Lines are the final layer on top of the story. Great writing rewards careful attention. A single comma, a but, or a yet can shift the meaning and change the energy of a moment.

The first trap most actors fall into is jumping straight into “playing it.” You lose objectivity and start performing instead of understanding. One trick I give my students is to imagine an actor who might be cast in the role. Picture their take first, then step inside and discover your own version. This keeps you focused on the story rather than on yourself and helps you stay open to surprises. Acting starts with observation, not performance.
