Arcangelo Corelli (1653-1713)
Born in the Northern part of Italy, Arcangelo Corelli had already lost his father shortly before he was born. He proved himself to be a child genius on the
violin and continued his education in Bologna under Giovanni Benvenuti and
Leonard Brugnoli. At the age of sixteen, having passed a remarkably difficult
theoretical examination, he was accepted into the famous "Accademia filarmonica"
the only musician who has been admitted to this illustrious society at a younger age was Mozart, a century later. Having concluded his studies, Corelli moved to
Rome, where he established contacts to the art-loving aristocracy and spiritual patrons. He first found work as a violinist in church concerts, before entering into the service of Queen Christine of Sweden, who resided at the Palazzo Riario following her conversion to the Catholic faith (1658). Corelli was so highly regarded as a violinist and concertmaster that he was engaged by Pietro Ottoboni on the death of the Queen to direct the grand musical performances at his palace.
The young cardinal and vice-chancellor of the Roman church and nephew to Pope
Alexander VIII was a patron to a number of musicians, a patron of various musical institutions, and a collector of books, paintings, sculptures, and tapestries. He paid Corelli so generously that he could afford to lead a life of comparative luxury,
while at the same time assembling a host of pupils who spread his violin technique throughout Europe. In his music, he concentrated solely on instrumental works and did not pass on any composition to a publisher before he had tested its effect at private performances. He was particularly concerned with ensuring that the sound of the strings from the Cremona violin workshop was shown to full advantage. His total of twelve Concerti Grossi op. 6 were published in Amsterdam in 1713 and can be divided up into two large groups: Numbers 1 - 8 form the Concerti "da chiesa" - these were mainly played during church services, were stricter, more contrapuntal, and full of devotional expression in their slow movements. The remaining Concerti Grossi are of the "musica de camera" type and consist of a sequence of dance movements. The most famous of the series of Opus 6 was to become the concerto No. 8 in G major; according to reliable conjecture it was played at the annual Christmas Eve celebrations at the Vatican Palace.
However, if the final movement, the famous pastorale in the tradition of the
shepherds' Christmas music omitted, the work could be performed on any other
suitable occasion.
