Otoplasty refers to the procedure whereby we correct the problem of prominent ears. Prominent ears are ears that stick out too far and maybe don't have the natural fold that most people have right here. The operation is commonly done after the age of five, usually we don't offer it before the age of five because the ears haven't completely formed. Five is a pretty good age because it's before school starts and before kids are subjected to some of the derogatory comments that are common with a problem such as this. As we go into the older age groups, we have people in their teens that have this operation, and even adults who didn't have the opportunity as a child to have this procedure.

For most people, it's really life changing. Certainly for the children during their formative years it's very life changing, and even for women with prominent ears. Afterwards they can wear their hair up and back and in different styles that they couldn't do before. When we do the operation we make an incision behind the ear, in the natural crevice behind the ear, so it is pretty well hidden. When the ear is folded back, usually there's some extra skin generated and so we remove that strip of skin and put stitches between the cartilage and the side of the head to hold it in. It takes several weeks for that healing to be complete to a point you don't have to worry about it coming back out or being pulled loose. It's very important to protect that area for at least six weeks after the operation. Normally, after the operation people are presentable, able to go back to work, maybe go back to school in ten to twelve days. Once again, there aren’t too many operations we have that are as potentially life changing, especially for young people, otoplasty offers this change.
