The next-generation 2025 Peugeot 5008 seven-seat SUV has been unveiled in electric E-5008 form, ahead of European deliveries later this year, and an Australian arrival sometime in 2025.
As one of few seven-seat SUVs planned for the Australian market, the E-5008 will fit between the full-size, Drive Car of the Year-winning Kia EV9 electric SUV (priced from $97,000 before on-road costs) and the Mercedes-Benz EQB ($87,834 plus on-roads) in dimensions.
A key boast for the E-5008 is its 660km maximum claimed driving range in European WLTP testing, thanks to an optional 98kWh long-range battery.
Built on the same platform as the E-3008 – due in Australian showrooms in the second half of 2024 – the E-5008 stretches overall length by 250mm and the wheelbase by 170mm. The E-5008 is also 50mm taller than its smaller E-3008 sibling.
The new seven-seater is likely to be re-classified as a 'large SUV' in Australia, as it is about 150mm longer nose to tail than its predecessor, and similarly sized to the outgoing Hyundai Santa Fe.
It rides on a version of the STLA Medium platform, developed by Peugeot’s parent company Stellantis for electric vehicles first, and petrol engines second.
Two electrified petrol engine options will follow, one with 48-volt mild-hybrid assistance, and the other a plug-in hybrid.
The electric E-5008 comes in two trim grades in Europe, Allure and GT, while three electric powertrain options are on offer overseas.
An entry-level version utilises a 73kWh battery pack to power a single electric motor on the front axle with 157kW/345Nm outputs. This version is estimated to be capable of up to 500km between charges.
A long-range, more powerful 170kW/345Nm single electric motor version is available with a 98kWh battery – the variant with the longest estimated driving range of 660km.
A dual-motor, all-wheel-drive version with up to 237kW (157kW at the front, 80kW at the rear) is the flagship electric variant.
All three electric models can accept energy at up to 160kW on a DC fast charger, said to deliver a 20 to 80 per cent recharge in 30 minutes. AC home charging at up to 11kW is standard, with 22kW on-board charging technology available at extra cost.
The E-5008’s styling is characterised by a high window line and geometric front grille beset by a pair of slim headlights.
Peugeot’s trademark three-claw daytime running lights incorporate with a grille that blends to body colour, while the E-5008 GT equips Pixel LED headlights as standard.
A set of 19-inch wheels are fitted to the entry-level Allure, whereas the flagship GT variant scores 20-inch alloys.
Inside the seven-seat cabin, Peugeot claims 259 litres of boot space in seven-seat guise, 748L with five seats, and up to 1815L with the second and third rows of seats folded flat.
The front row mimics the futuristic styling first seen on the E-3008, and Alcantara upholstery is standard.
The top-of-the-range GT variant gets a widescreen 21-inch panoramic 'i-Cockpit' display for instruments and infotainment functionality, while the cheaper Allure model grade is fitted with twin 10-inch displays.
Both versions score a row of 'i-Toggle' shortcuts placed on a small screen on the dashboard, which drivers can personalise to their tastes.
The steering wheel is heated as standard on the E-5008 GT, and its buttons are touch-sensitive, but Peugeot says in its media release "they automatically detect the driver's fingers ... but are only activated when the driver presses them to avoid activation by mistake."
Natural language voice recognition is available for controlling the air-conditioning or phone functionality, while ChatGPT artificial intelligence is available to “provide interaction between the occupants and the vehicle … to support users and answer any questions they may have”.
The E-5008 is said to use more than 500kg of green materials in its construction, including recycled plastic in the bumpers, storage areas, and carpeting.
The 2025 Peugeot E-5008 is due in Australian showrooms next year, following the local debut of its smaller E-3008 sibling.
