The Jehovah's Witnesses cult manipulated, controlled, and deceived me, and kept me in fear - Carol

Today I spoke with Carol, who grew up in a Baptist environment but in adulthood became a Jehovah's Witness, before ultimately fully deconverting as she examined the worldview claims of Christianity.

We touched on many topics, including:

• Attending a Baptist church that was considered extreme even by other Baptist Churches in the area.
• Growing up traumatized over fear of missing the Rapture.
• Being very concerned about what the unforgiveable sin was and whether she had ever committed it.
• Feeling bothered by the idea of the unsaved who never heard the Gospel going to hell.
• Learning that other religions have parallel and very similar themes to Christianity.
• Being so jaded from evangelical Christianity that Jehovah's Witnesses (JW) became appealing to her.
• Realizing, afterward, that JW's work you till you systematically give away your power and autonomy.
• Seeing JW's praise converts extensively for anything they do right in order to manipulate them.
• Feeling like god hated her.
• How depression from her son being disfellowshipped and her adoptive father passing away ended up being an early crack in her deconversion.
• Seeing up close the very effective control tactics of the JW organization, primarily through fear.
• Waiting on Armageddon so god can fix the world but fearing that she might still get annihilated if she displeased Jehovah.
• Not letting herself get counseling for fear of bringing reproach to Jehovah's name.
• Being angry and regretful at the ways that the JW organization stole years of her life and years of close contact with non-JW family members that she could have had.
• Grieving the loss of time with her family, especially birthdays and holidays.
• Setting up higher standards, going forward, of reason, logic, and evidence for any worldview claims.
