On June 18, 2023, OceanGate's submersible Titan tragically disappeared near the wreck of the Titanic.
Among the 5 passengers on board was French deep-sea diver and explorer Paul-Henri Nargeolet, known as "Mister Titanic."
I had loved his book "Into the Depths of the Titanic" when it was released in spring 2022. So, I searched for interviews with the author on the internet and discovered a man who was simple and modest despite his international fame. He seemed somewhat like a big kid, still amazed by the incredible adventures he had lived and happy to share them.
The news of his disappearance under absurd circumstances (due to an unreliable vessel, created and piloted by an evidently reckless and egocentric individual) left me extremely saddened. What was he doing in that tin can, he who had so much diving experience? What a grim end...
In reality, Paul-Henri Nargeolet had already completed several successful dives aboard the Titan. For OceanGate, his presence on previous dives was a mark of seriousness and the assurance of having "the" Titanic specialist on board.
The cancellation of a mission in 2021 due to COVID-19 had kept him away from the wreck. So, he seized the new opportunities that came his way to return again and again to visit the Titanic, as one would visit an old friend.
Ultimately, I came to understand that this man's destiny was to perish near the hull of the ocean liner... a fitting resting place for this great explorer of the deep sea.

The title of this piece may seem macabre at first glance, but in music—since the mid-17th century, particularly in France—a Tombeau refers to a composition or a suite of pieces written in tribute to a renowned individual to whom the composer feels indebted. Most often, it is a musical homage from one composer to another "master" composer.
Often slow and meditative in tempo, the piece or suite is not necessarily sorrowful, as exemplified by the famous Tombeau de Couperin by Maurice Ravel, completed in 1917.
We might also imagine, in the classical sense of the word, the final resting place of Paul-Henri Nargeolet: the depths of the ocean surrounding the wreck of the Titanic…

Le 18 juin 2023, le submersible Titan de la société OceanGate disparaissait tragiquement à proximité de l’épave du Titanic.
A son bord, parmi les 5 passagers, se trouvait notamment le plongeur sous marin et explorateur français Paul-Henri Nargeolet, spécialiste du Titanic, surnommé « Mister Titanic »
J’avais littéralement « dévoré » son livre « Dans les profondeurs du Titanic » dès sa parution au printemps 2022. J’avais donc cherché des interviews de l’auteur sur internet, pour découvrir un homme simple et modeste malgré sa renommée internationale.Il m’apparaissait un peu comme un grand enfant, encore étonné d’avoir vécu des aventures incroyables et heureux de les partager.
L’annonce de sa disparition dans des conditions absurdes (un appareil peu fiable, créé et piloté par un individu manifestement inconscient et égocentrique) m’aura rendu extrêment triste. Qu’allait-il faire dans cette boîte de conserve, lui qui avait tant d’expérience de plongée ?
Quelle fin sinistre…
En réalité, Paul-Henri Nargeolet avait déjà effectué plusieurs plongées réussies à bord du Titan. Pour OceanGate, sa présence à bord lors des précédentes plongées était un gage de sérieux et l’assurance d’avoir à bord « le » spécialiste du Titanic.
L’annulation d’une mission en 2021 à cause du covid-19 l’avait tenu éloigné de l’épave.
Il saisissait donc les nouvelles occasions qui se présentaient à lui de retourner encore et encore visiter le Titanic, comme on rendrait visite à un vieil ami.
Finalement, j’ai donc compris que le destin de cet homme était de périr à côté de l’épave du paquebot… la plus belle sépulture pour ce grand explorateur des fonds marins.

Le titre de ce morceau peut sembler macabre à prime abord, mais en musique, depuis le milieu du XVIIème siècle, essentiellement en France, un « Tombeau » désigne une pièce - ou une suite de pièce écrite en hommage à une personne célèbre à qui l’on est redevable. (majoritairement un hommage d’un compositeur de musique à autre « maître » compositeur)
Souvent de rythme lent et méditatif, la pièce ou la suite de pièces n’est pas nécessairement triste comme en témoigne le très célèbre « Tombeau de Couperin » de Maurice Ravel terminé en 1917.
