Step inside one of the most atmospheric libraries in the National Trust’s care. Tucked away in the Norfolk countryside, Felbrigg Hall is home to a magnificent 18th-century library containing over 5,000 rare and historic books.

The collection was largely assembled by William Windham II (1717–1761), a distinguished scholar and Grand Tour traveller with a deep passion for philosophy, travel, science, and history. Later, as the library expanded under William Windham III, the original bay window at the west end of the room was blocked up to create even more shelving for the growing collection.

The carpet you see today is a faithful replica of the original from the 1840s, expertly woven to replace the much-worn and faded original. And one of our favourite quirks? A discreet ‘secret’ WC, cleverly concealed behind a jib door — perfect for those moments when you simply can’t put your book down!

💡 Did you know: The oldest book in the collection dates back to 1509, the same year that Henry VIII became King of England 👑
