STORYLINE:

An Afghan civilian who traveled to Pakistan from Kandahar on Friday said there was daily U-S bombing in and around the city but that Northern Alliance forces had not yet entered the city.

The man, who identified himself only by his tribe, Noorzai, said ethnic Pashtun fighters who oppose the Taliban would resist any attempt by the northern alliance to take control of Kandahar.

"There will be a new war if the Northern Alliance, together with American troops, tries to enter Kandahar. People will join with the Taliban and fight the Northern Alliance," said the man, who arrived in the Pakistani border town of Chaman.

He also said that many civilians were injured and houses were destroyed by the US bombing raids.

Tension emerged between the northern alliance and anti-Taliban Pashtun groups in southern Afghanistan, where the Taliban began their rise to power in 1994 with the help of local tribesmen.

Abdul Jabbar, an Afghan tribal leader in Pakistan who is in contact with anti-Taliban tribal forces, said the majority of Pashtun leaders now want the Taliban to go but strongly oppose a northern alliance advance toward Kandahar.

"We won't let them move into Kandahar," he said. "It's our right to rule Kandahar because this area belongs to us. Why are they coming into our territory?"

The northern alliance would be advancing into unfamiliar territory, but it has battle-tested and well-equipped troops.

In contrast, many Pashtun leaders are divided and still trying to negotiate the ouster of the Taliban rather than attack them.
