This week's video is a portrait drawing with graphite and white chalk pencil on toned paper. First I sketch in the general proportions and then start to rough in the features by thinking about light and shadow shapes, while keeping everything loose. Once I have this base, I start to refine everything a bit more, making sure the small proportions of anatomy and shadow shapes are accurate. I always try to lay down the lightest and darkest values near the beginning of the drawing, to establish the limits of the value range. For a portrait like this one, the value of the paper acts as one of the mid values of the skin, so at the end there should be some bare paper showing between the white chalk lights and the shadows and darker half-tones of the graphite. As I go along, I am refining values, shapes and edges to build form and achieve a likeness.
