The Medela SpecialNeeds® Feeder is designed for babies who struggle with feeding due to cleft lip and/or palate, neurological conditions, or other challenges that make suction and compression difficult. Unlike standard bottles, this system uses a long, soft silicone nipple with a slit valve that allows caregivers to control the milk flow by simply rotating the nipple to three different flow-rate positions.

The nipple is highly sensitive to even the weakest suckling efforts, so babies don’t have to work as hard to feed. If baby can’t create suction at all, gentle bottle squeezing provides the flow. This flexibility makes it an excellent choice for infants with complex feeding needs who tire easily or need extra support.

The SpecialNeeds Feeder comes in two sizes—standard for most infants and mini for smaller babies or when caregivers want tighter control of volumes during feeding. It’s widely used by cleft and craniofacial teams around the world.


How to Use
• Assemble the bottle by attaching the SpecialNeeds nipple with the slit valve.
• Fill with breast milk or formula.
• Position baby upright to encourage safe swallowing.
• Insert the nipple so that the slit is facing upward toward the roof of baby’s mouth.
• You can control milk flow by rotating the nipple:
• Line up the dot on the nipple with one of the three flow-rate marks.
• Start with the slowest flow and adjust as needed.
• Allow baby to suck/compress the nipple. If baby cannot draw milk independently, gently squeeze the bottle in rhythm with baby’s swallowing to assist.
• Take breaks and burp frequently to keep feeding comfortable.
