The simple answer is no. IF you have had a pap smear in the past three years. The guidelines on whether you need to have a pap smear or you do not are every three years. That is assuming you have a normal (negative for abnormal cells) pap smear.

If you have had an abnormal pap smear and it has been more than one year. I would encourage you to see your health care provider and have a pap smear performed before you get pregnant.

The reason I would recommend this is if you were to have a procedure on your cervix because of an abnormal pap smear (or have a biopsy on your cervix because of an abnormal pap smear) we would want to perform those prior to pregnancy. Cervical procedures cause bleeding. As a patient that is pregnant, you do not want to have bleeding of your cervix while you are pregnant.

So, in the situation when you have had an abnormal pap smear in the past I would encourage you to get your pap smear again before you get pregnant.

Unfortunately, lots of women have STDs (sexually transmitted diseases) and they don’t even know they have STDs. If you have any concerns about STDs I would encourage you to have that evaluated prior to pregnancy as well. Chlamydia, for example, is a very common STD and we would want that to be evaluated.

Treating any STDs prior to pregnancy will decrease your risk of an ectopic pregnancy (pregnancy outside of the uterus). So, if you have any concerns about STDs or any concerns about abnormal pap smear please see your healthcare provider before getting pregnant.
