In this video, we share a modification I decided to do to the CBI Dual Swing-Out Bumper on my 1998 Toyota 4runner. I always wanted to use a hitch-style bicycle carrier with my 98 4runner but thought using the standard receiver hitch wouldn't be ideal. A hitch receiver welded to one of the swing-outs would be better so the bike rack and bicycle wouldn't be in the way of opening the swing-outs when i want to open the rear hatch to access the cargo area during a trip.

The modification didn't work out as well as I hoped because I learned after the job that the weight of the bike rack and bikes is a little too much weight for the swing-out to handle. The swing-out flexes and could potentially cause the metal to fatigue and fail over time. It would also put more strain on the latch mechanism u-bolt causing them to break more frequently. The fix was a ratchet strap connected to the end of the bike rack and supported by the roof rack. It wan't a sexy fix, but it works well to keep the swing-out from flexing.
