The Legend of Indal and Lekha Padmini
In the 12th century, Singhlagarh (modern-day Sri Lanka) was ruled by King Sarahanag. His daughter, Lekha Padmini, was renowned for her beauty. She worshipped Goddess Jagdamba and wished for Indal, son of the legendary warrior Alha, as her husband.
Determined, she found out where Indal lived and, one night, arrived at his palace on a flying chariot. She woke him and proposed marriage. Indal, hesitant yet captivated, suggested a game of dice with a wager: if he won, she would stay; if she won, he would accompany her to Singhla. Indal won repeatedly, and Lekha agreed to marry him. However, after three wedding rounds, she declared the final four must take place in her kingdom after he won her in battle. She then left.
Indal, lovesick, abandoned all duties. His mother, Sunwa, and family questioned him, but he remained silent until he confessed to Sunwa. Alha dismissed the matter, and when Indal insisted, he was imprisoned under seven locks. He fasted and meditated on Goddess Durga. Moved by his devotion, the Goddess freed him, and with the help of Fulwa Malin, he escaped disguised in women's clothing.
Indal then sought Guru Amara, who advised him to become a wandering ascetic. He donned saffron robes, took a rosary, and traveled, even seeking alms from his family, who failed to recognize him. Using enchanted sandals, he flew to Singhla. There, he camped in the barren royal garden, which miraculously flourished due to his spiritual power. As news of the holy man spread, Lekha came to see him. Suspecting his true identity, she tested him, and upon realizing he was Indal, they secretly met every night.
Soon, the palace servants noticed Lekha’s increasing weight and reported it to the king, who set spies. When Indal was discovered, soldiers were sent, but he defeated them with his magical staff. Eventually, he was captured using a divine snare and imprisoned. The king arranged Lekha’s marriage to Gajraj Singh of Lohagarh. However, Lekha, determined to save Indal, secretly tunneled to his prison.
Meanwhile, the groom’s army arrived, supported by Mal Khan, Indal’s uncle. A fierce battle ensued, ending in Lohagarh’s defeat. Seeing no alternative, King Sarahanag offered Indal a final trial—battle. Indal, given armor and weapons, fought valiantly, proving his worth. When Mal Khan realized Indal’s true identity, he embraced him and declared Lekha rightfully his.
Back in Mahoba, Indal’s disappearance had caused sorrow. Alha, Udal, and their warriors set out for Singhla. On their way, they encountered Mal Khan and Indal, now married. They all returned to Mahoba, but Mal Khan’s wife mourned her brother’s failed marriage, feeling dishonored.
Thus ended the tale of Indal and Lekha Padmini—of love, devotion, and valor, forever etched in history.
