The Scorpion kingdom and the Spider kingdom used to be at war. The scribbles on the wall in the clock room show the spiders fighting the scorpions.

The king of the Scorpion kingdom has married the queen or princess of the Spider kingdom, who is now pregnant. This was probably an arranged marriage meant to secure an alliance between the kingdoms.

The vain king rejects the baby because he thinks he is ugly, but the queen loves the child.

The queen gives the prince a dog as a gift. The king doesn't seem to care about the two of them and looks at the maid instead.

From various decorations and memories, we also know there is an older maid from the Spider kingdom (green flower) and a younger maid from the Scorpion kingdom (blue flower). The prince, queen, dog, and two maids play music together, make costumes for plays, and have all sorts of fun adventures.

The king demands that the prince wear a mask to hide his "ugly" face. He gets more and more insistent until a fight breaks out and the dog bites him.

The queen's eye was hurt during the fight and the king has killed the dog. He throws the dog's body in the furnace.

The queen, now wearing an eye patch, still tells the prince that he is beautiful. She tries to run away with the prince but the king catches them.

The queen dies from a "strange illness." The king probably killed her.

With the queen gone, the king tells the prince he is ugly but he could be beautiful if he wore the mask.

The king forces the prince to practice piano and do other princely duties. He likes that the child is lonely and fully under his control.

But the king still wants an heir in his image. He is good-looking and women are attracted to him.

The king impregnates many maids because he still wants a proper heir who is as handsome as he is. He is impatient for the arrival of the new babies.

But the king is unhappy with the resulting babies. He throws all of them into the furnace.

The young maid still loves the prince and spends time with him. The king is angry and locks her up. He probably doesn't kill her because she appears alive in the ending song.

The king grafts the mask onto the prince's face using hot metal so that the prince will never be able to take the mask off.

At one of the king's parties, the older maid (green flower) gives him a poisoned drink. The poison either makes the king see a physically ugly version of himself in the mirror or it shows him his true self as someone who is ugly on the inside. The king gets angry and throws a candelabra at the mirror, which starts a fire.

The king is badly burned and his face is disfigured. He paints over paintings of him and smashes all the mirrors because he cannot bear to see his face in the mirror or see his old handsome face in paintings. He turns to alcohol. He lost everything.

The ending. It's not clear whether the king's hanging was an accident or not. Was he trying to leave the castle or did he hang himself intentionally?

The final song features the prince, who is now grown up, his face scarred from the mask that was grafted onto his face. He is playing a piano and singing with the young maid, the older maid, and the ghosts of the queen, dog, and other people the king has murdered.
